UPDATE March 2026 (Latest):

In March 2026, the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) released a significant update to TR19 Air – 'Specification for Internal Cleanliness and Hygiene Management of Ventilation Systems'. UPDATE October 2023:

On the 12th of October 2023 at the BESA Conference, there was a session on "How to be competent and compliant with the brand new TR19 Air specification" where it was announced that the new TR19 Air guide will be released before the new year.

What is TR19 Air?

TR19 Air is a specification published by Building Engineering Services Association for the cleanliness of ventilation systems.

It sets out how systems should be inspected, tested, cleaned, and verified to maintain good indoor air quality and system performance, aligning with standards like BS EN 15780.

TR19 Air is separate from TR19 Grease, which focuses on fire risk in kitchen extract systems.

The latest update (March 2026) strengthens requirements around:

• Post-clean reporting and evidence

• Verification of cleanliness

• Use of the Ventilation Hygiene Register (VHR) for demonstrating competence
  

It’s not law, but it’s widely used as the industry benchmark for compliance and best practice in ventilation hygiene.
