Air Cleaning Technologies & AHU Installation in Northamptonshire: Case Study
A New Formula 1 Facility Demands World-Class Indoor Air Quality
In 2022, ARM Environments was engaged to support one of the most high-profile projects we have been involved with: the development of a brand-new, state-of-the-art headquarters for Aston Martin's Formula 1 racing team at Silverstone, Northamptonshire.
The facility spans 15,000m² across two floors, designed to accommodate every discipline involved in building a competitive Formula 1 car — from initial concept and R&D through to precision manufacturing, assembly, and high-tech performance testing. It is, in every sense, an elite working environment. The teams who occupy it are among the most technically demanding professionals in sport, and the conditions they work in need to match that standard.
The client's specification was clear: low levels of particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and odours throughout the building. A facility of this scale, housing this level of precision engineering, cannot afford the productivity losses, health impacts, or equipment contamination risks that poor indoor air quality introduces.
Key challenges:
- Strict and specific air quality design specifications across a large, complex facility
- A high-profile project with no margin for underperformance
- An industry with a growing focus on sustainability and occupant wellbeing
Our AHU Installation at Silverstone
To meet the specifications set out for this Northamptonshire facility, we deployed a combination of the latest electronic air cleaning technologies — each chosen for what it contributes to a complete, layered approach to indoor air quality.
Bipolar ionisation was installed within the fan coil units using technology unique to ARM Environments. Bipolar ionisers work by generating and releasing charged oxygen ions into the airstream, which actively break down airborne pollutants including TVOCs, particulate matter, bacteria, odorous gases, aerosols, and volatile organic compounds at the source, rather than simply capturing them downstream.
UVGI (Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation) systems were installed directly into the air handling units (AHUs). Positioned to irradiate the heating and cooling coils, UVGI technology keeps the internal components of the AHU clean by eliminating organic matter — bacteria, mould, and other biological contaminants — that would otherwise accumulate on the coils and degrade both air quality and system performance over time.
The long-term implication of UVGI installation is significant: cleaner coils mean better heat exchange efficiency, reduced energy consumption, and fewer maintenance interventions — a meaningful operational saving across a 15,000m² facility.

Results: Future-Proofed Air Quality for an Elite Motorsport Team
The completed installation delivered on every element of the client's design specification. Particulate matter, TVOC levels, and odours are all controlled to the standard required for a world-class engineering environment — ensuring that the air quality inside the building supports rather than undermines the work being done within it.
For a Formula 1 operation, where in-person collaboration between engineers, designers, and mechanics is non-negotiable, the quality of that environment matters more than it might at first appear. Cognitive performance, concentration, and decision-making are all measurably affected by indoor air quality — and at the level Aston Martin's team operates, every marginal gain counts. As Adam Taylor puts it, worries about IAQ simply cannot be allowed to distract people whose job it is to build a championship-winning car.
Beyond performance, the UVGI systems installed within the AHUs ensure that the facility's air quality infrastructure is genuinely future-proofed. With cleaner coils and reduced biological build-up, the team at Silverstone will benefit from lower maintenance costs and extended system lifespan — delivering a return on the investment over the years ahead.
"In-person collaboration is often an essential requirement for high-performing teams. It was critical that worries about IAQ did not distract the Aston Martin Formula 1 team from their jobs. Their building has been fitted with the latest clean air systems, so they can concentrate on building a championship-winning car."
