ARM Environments Named Finalist for Product Innovation at BESA Industry Awards

The team here at ARM Environments is absolutely buzzing to announce that we’ve been shortlisted for Product Innovation of the Year at the BESA Industry Awards 2023.

Selection as a finalist by the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) serves as an important industry validation of our Air Quality Determined Ventilation (AQDV) technology. For our team, this shortlisting confirms that the industry is moving toward a more data-centric approach to building management — one where air quality and energy efficiency are managed as a single, integrated priority.

Event Details

The BESA Industry Awards 2023 will be held on October 12th at the Novotel London West, serving as a major focal point for excellence in the building services sector. This event brings together the industry’s most influential engineers and innovators to recognize the projects and technologies shaping the future of our built environment. ARM Environments is honoured to be included in the proceedings, with our CEO, Adam Taylor, attending as we wait to hear the final results for the Product Innovation of the Year category.

What is AQDV?

Traditional ventilation systems often rely on rigid schedules, leading to energy waste and inconsistent air quality. AQDV (Air Quality Determined Ventilation) introduces an intelligent control layer that utilizes real-time environmental data to modulate ventilation rates dynamically. By creating a "digital twin" of the HVAC infrastructure, the system ensures that ventilation is always purposeful, efficient, and data-led.

Core Benefits of AQDV:

  • Optimized Indoor Air Quality (IAQ): By monitoring Outdoor Air Quality (OAQ), AQDV intelligently restricts air intake during external pollution spikes, ensuring only the cleanest available air enters the building.
  • Reduced Carbon Footprint: AQDV eliminates "over-ventilation" by identifying exactly when and where fresh air is required. This precision reduces the load on heating and cooling plants, supporting Net Zero targets and improving EPC ratings.
  • Extended HVAC Plant Life: Optimizing the duty cycle of fans and motors reduces mechanical stress. This prevents excessive wear from constant high-load running, extending equipment lifecycles and deferring capital replacement costs.
  • Minimized Filter Waste: By avoiding air intake during high-pollution events, the particulate load on filtration is reduced. This can extend filter life from 6 to 12 months, lowering maintenance overheads and reducing landfill waste.

A message from Adam Taylor, CEO

This recognition by BESA aligns with our ongoing commitment to improving UK building standards. With our CEO, Adam Taylor, serving as the Chair of the BESA IAQ Group, ARM Environments remains dedicated to developing solutions that meet the requirements of Approved Document F while pushing the boundaries of what is possible in building engineering.

"Being shortlisted by BESA is a truly proud moment for everyone involved in the development of AQDV and the ARM Environments team. We are incredibly grateful for this recognition, which reflects a growing industry consensus that ventilation must evolve to become more responsive to the actual conditions of a building and its occupants. It’s an honour to see our commitment to healthier, more efficient spaces validated by our peers." — Adam Taylor, CEO

Learn More about AQDV

What is Air Quality Determined Ventilation (AQDV)?

AQDV is an award-nominated control strategy that uses real-time indoor and outdoor sensor data to automate ventilation rates, optimizing for both air purity and energy efficiency.

Who recognized ARM Environments for this innovation?

The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) shortlisted the technology for Product Innovation of the Year at their 2023 Industry Awards.

How does AQDV help with Net Zero goals?

By ensuring ventilation systems only run at the required intensity, AQDV significantly reduces the energy used by fans, heaters, and chillers, directly lowering a building’s operational carbon footprint.
