BESA TR19 Air – 2023 / 2024 (Live Updates)

On the 12th of October 2023 at the BESA Conference, there was a session on "How to be competent and compliant with the brand new TR19 Air specification" where it was announced that the new TR19 Air guide will be released before the new year.

UPDATE April 2024: BESA released the new TR19 Air on 15 April 2024. For more information on what TR19 Air covers, see our full article: A Guide to BESA TR19 Air in 2024.

BESA are also running a webinar on 30 April at 12pm to run through the changes to TR19 Air.

What is TR19 Air?

BESA offer two pieces of guidance on air hygiene:

  • TR19® Grease Specification for Fire Risk Management of Grease Accumulation within Kitchen Extraction Systems
  • TR 19 Air - Guide to Good Practice - Internal Cleanliness of Ventilation Systems (UPDATED 2023)

TR19 Air offers practical guidance on testing and cleaning of air distribution and ventilation systems to meet required standards. It incorporates reference to UK and European Standards for cleanliness of air duct systems.

TR19 was first launched in 2005. In 2013, it was updated to incorporate both European guidance and BS EN15780. In 2019, TR19 Third edition section 7 was withdrawn from the guidance, and became a standalone guide, TR19 Grease - specifically covering Fire risk management resulting from grease build-up in kitchen extract systems.

The Ventilation Hygiene Register (VHR) Scheme allows businesses to self-certify their specialist hygiene contracts to the required industry TR19 Air Specification. Being part of the scheme demonstrates to clients that you work to the highest level of compliance and competence. Registered companies should be able to provide a valid TR19® Certificate of Company Registration to clients.

More detail can be found in our TR19 guide.
