CIBSE AM10 "Natural ventilation in non-domestic buildings" provides guidance on the design of natural ventilation systems and covers a range of topics including the principles of natural ventilation, design calculations, thermal comfort, air quality and control strategies. It aims to help engineers, architects and designers create buildings that are comfortable for occupants, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly by using natural means to ventilate spaces rather than relying solely on mechanical systems.
The manual is intended to be used as a reference for best practices and is often updated to reflect the latest standards, technologies and research in the field of natural ventilation.
It provides insights into the effectiveness of ventilation, control mechanisms, and the use of modelling and simulation in the design process. It also includes case studies to illustrate practical applications, discusses relevant regulations and standards, and offers guidance on the maintenance and operation of natural ventilation systems to ensure their long-term efficiency and effectiveness. You can buy the current version from CIBSE.
Members of the CIBSE Natural Ventilation group have been proposing amendments to the CIBSE AM10 guide. The amendments are currently with CIBSE for review. It was previously hoped that the revised AM10 guide would be released towards the end of 2023.
History of CIBSE AM10
1997: First Published
2005: Updated (including a design tool for IAQ analysis)
2025: Due to be Updated
2026: Updated
On the 19th of March 2026, CIBSE released their long-anticipated update of their AM10 document. This updated guide collates modern research and advice from industry professionals. It details the ways in which natural ventilation can be used in non-domestic buildings, and is designed to be user-friendly for both the industry experts and those with little IEQ knowledge.
The updated document can be found on the official CIBSE website.
In June of 2025, in a CIBSE Council Meeting, AM10 was described as a 'forthcoming' publication, indicating that technical work was well underway but not yet complete.
The group will host the CIBSE Technical Symposium 2026 at Loughborough University on the 26-27 March. Having missed the 2025 window, there is a good chance we will hear about AM10 at some point this year, and although nothing is confirmed yet, we wouldn't be surprised to hear some news on an AM10 update at this event.
AM10 is currently with CIBSE awaiting publication, this is now expected to be in 2025.
The updated version of AM10 is currently under review, the revised document is currently scheduled for release by Summer 2024.
At ARM Environments we keep an eye on all building standards like AM10 so we can help our clients achieve IAQ compliance. Some of our advice on natural ventilation covers:
Whether you're a building manager handling an air quality complaint or you're an engineer who wants to check the air quality is up to CIBSE's AM10 standards, we offer a range of services that can help. We conduct various air quality testing services across the UK, including mould tests, carbon dioxide tests, carbon monoxide tests, and particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) tests. We can also test air flow and provide ventilation validation certificates to prove a building is being properly ventilated. View all our services here.
Providing high quality air for your occupants can be a daunting task, and when something goes wrong, people can be quick to point the blame. If you're interested in safeguarding yourself and your occupant's health and wellbeing with an air quality service from ARM Environments, contact us here for a quick and easy quote or expert advice.
